The engine coolant can also become polluted by the transmission fluid, as the pressures of either liquid vacillate. The extent of damage to either circuit depends on the severity and longevity of the internal leak.5. Transmission Noises. Without the right amount of fluid or when the cooler doesn't keep the transmission from overheating, there could be strange noises. You may start to hear a groaning or growling sound, especially when the gears shift, because of a lack of lubrication. Furthermore, there could be a clunking sound. My concern here is that someone had the cooling/transmission issue and fixed the radiator side of the problem, flushed the transmission fluid, and then put the car up for sale. I've read that, even in this situation, the underlying damage to the transmission might already be done, but could take some time to show itself.
