It was the gas cap. I purchased the valve and cap at the same time and tried the cap first. Since the MIL has cleared itself, it must be the cap per your comment about the light. I had purchased a locking cap 18 months ago. The locking cap no longer holds the vacuum in the tank. The seal is fine, the cap valve is not.
