Started to hear a grinding noise where the starter and bendex is when trying to start the bike with the key, until eventually it wouldn't even start with the key anymore, as it would just do the grinding. The bendex has been already changed not long ago..

Thought were the same 168 tooth large flexplate automatic. there are 2 starters for big block one has 11 teeth and one has 9 teeth. lots off parts places list them as same part # im guessing you been getting a 11 tooth. look and see. late 1990's gen iv 454 should all be the 9 tooth. that's the direction I would go.When installed backwards the teeth are too far forward. When the starter engages, it throws fully out. Because his flywheel is backwards (presumably) the starter bendix (the gear part that extends and turns) grinds against the face of the incorrectly installed flywheel. That is the proper starter for that flywheel because the starter for the 153 tooth flywheel (mounting holes straight across) could not possibly bolt on with the 168 tooth flywheel.
